Buzzy Central Phoenix is about to get a major design upgrade with the opening of West Elm within the Uptown Plaza shopping center this summer. Known for its contemporary and stylish furniture and home décor, the CenPho West Elm store will be the Brooklyn-based brand’s second Arizona location outside of Kierland Commons.

Three clothing boutique concepts opened their doors last month inside the Uptown Plaza shopping center, the landmark midcentury shopping center at the northeast corner of Central Avenue and Camelback Road. Each offers something different to the discerning clothes shopper. Local Nomad, which opened Oct. 15, is a locally owned clothing, jewelry and accessories boutique that features stylish yet sustainably made goods from around the world as well as right here in Arizona.

There are many places to shop local in Phoenix, but the idea behind Local Nomad – a new boutique set in the revamped Uptown Plaza – offers shoppers the ability to buy handmade apparel, accessories, and décor from around the world. Owned by Lauren Danuser, Local Nomad opened on October 11.

Uptown Plaza in Phoenix continues its transformation with the latest — and sweetest — addition: Creamistry, the ice cream store is set to open on Monday, July 11, next to the new Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria at Central Avenue and Camelback Road. The sweet shop, a California-based franchise founded by a former Arizona Cardinals player, serves made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream.

They got an inside peek at the work-in-progress, heard an actual vintage vinyl radio jingle for the plaza, learned about Del Webb Construction’s massive impact on Valley development and toured the new site at the heart of Modern Phoenix.

When Del Webb built the original Uptown Plaza in 1955, most of the anchors for the shopping destination were retailers like Bostrom’s department store and Porters apparel. But since getting a major facelift last year, the plaza is banking on dining as the new draw — Sam Fox’s Flower Child was the first restaurant to open, with New York City-based Shake Shack and popular Chicago pie joint Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria scheduled to follow by spring 2016.
